The one-dimensional barcodes were designed to be mechanically scanned by a narrow beam of light, and a QR code is detected by a 2-dimensional digital image sensor and then digitally analyzed by a QR code generator. Standard barcodes can only be read one way – from top to bottom. That is, they can only store a limited amount of data (12 digits), typically in an alphanumeric format.
